Overview
Nar and Phu Valley were closed to tourists until 2002, and are far removed in both the time and space from the neighboring Annapurna Circuit. As you branch north up the Nar Valley, the flood of trekkers passing through Manang turns to a tiny trickle. Yak herding and agriculture remain the mainstays of the economy rather than tourism, and the traditional stone-walled villages seem to have maintained a lifestyle untouched for centuries.
The trek takes you up narrow gorges to medieval villages, past impressive chortens, herds of blue sheep and spectacular Cliffside trails, and finally over one of the region’s highest trekking passes. You will pass abandoned settlements once used by Khampa rebels and teams of mountaineers headed to the popular peaks of Himling, Kang Garu and Ratna Chuli.
The trek to Nar Phu Valley is an excellent, adventurous add-on while visiting the Manang region or partaking in the the Manaslu trek. After NarPhu, you could even continue to Jomsom, either over the Thorung La or, if you are properly equipped, via Tilicho lake and Meso Kanto La, making full use of time.
Upon arrival at Tribhuwan International Airport in Kathmandu, we will welcome you and take you to the Hotel. We can meet later on that day or the next day to take you to our head office to brief you on your upcoming trek with us. Here, we will introduce you to your trekking guide and Sherpa. If your flight arrives on time, we will take you to one of the most popular local restaurants with delicious Nepalese food, cultural music and ethnic dance. This will give you a glimpse into the different ethnic groups of the country. If you arrive late in the evening we can do this the next day. Overnight at the hotel. |
After breakfast, you will begin a city tour of Kathmandu where you will see the main attractions of the valley. On this tour you will visit the Boudhnath Stupa, Pashupatinath temple, Swyambhunath Stupa (Monkey Temple), and Kathmandu Durbar Square (the old palace). After the city tour, we will meet again to check your clothing and trekking equipment (sleeping bag, down jacket and trekking boots). Overnight in Kathmandu. |
Our guide will meet you at the hotel as per departure time and takes you to the bus station where your journey starts towards west of Kathmandu through Prithivi highway till Dumre. This is an excellent drive which has interesting scenery of the mountains, rivers, waterfalls and jungle as well as farm terraces and village. Overnight at the lodge. |
After breakfast, an easy walk through the dusty road towards north of the valley and ends at Bhulbhule before crossing the suspension bridge over Marsyangdi River. On this trail, you will enjoy the view of Mt. Manaslu and Nagdi Chuli including many waterfalls and Gurung village. After that the trail leads uphill to Bahundanda for overnight stay. |
After breakfast, the trail drops steep down to the bottom of the hill and few up downs to Syange to cross suspension bridge. There is mind-blowing view of waterfall at Syange. Then the trail continues to Chamje. Overnight at the lodge. |
Today the trail drops down to the river to Tal Phedi. There is a short steep climb to get to the Tal and an easy walk through the valley. Tal is a first village of Manang District which is located on the bank of the Marsyangdi River and has a entrance gate that is influenced by Tibetan culture. Then the trail continues up and down to Dharapani village and continues up to Bagarchhap for overnight. |
After breakfast, the trail slightly climbs up to Danaque from where you will enjoy the view of Mt.Manaslu. There are two ways to get to the next village but we will take you through the higher route which has an excellent view of mountains and passing through the old village of Tyanja. Then easy walk through the pine forest to Koto for Overnight. |
Nar-Phu has long been considered a ‘hidden land’, and even these days most Annapurna trekkers stride straight past the entrance to the valley without even realizing it. The branches off the Annapurna Circuit at Koto (Qupar). The trail climbs steeply above the river through silent forest into a vertical world of cliffs, pine and bamboo and through an open patch of ferns, passing several small-scale hand-sawn timber camps. Overnight in Dharamsala. |
From the Dharamsala climb past a landslip and a shepherds’ herd to cross a stream. The trail then veers right, up a side valley, and climbs steeply on switchbacks. |
From Khyang quickly swing into the dry, desert gorge of the Phu river, inching along on a hair-raising section of trail carved out of the cliff face. You can follow the yak trail onto the moraine but for base camp itself (three hours) follow the stream side trail that squeezes between the hillside and the moraine. |
The trail drop past fantastically eroded hoodoos, over sandy gullies connected by bridge-like platforms. The entire mountainside feels like it’s about to collapse at any moment. |
Today’s climb starts immediately with a steep burst up to the main trail and it doesn’t ease up for an hour or more. |
Today’s trek is less than two hours so you can either spend most of the day exploring Nar before departing for Kang La Phedi. Leave Nar through the village kani and take the gradual path up through the valley, Pisang Peak. |
The ascent of the kang La isn’t all that difficult in good conditions, through it can be treacherous in bed weather or if there’s lot of snow. You can expect snow and ice as late as September, but the trail is generally kept clear by convoys of yaks and trekking groups. |
After breakfast the trail descents to Pissang via Gharu which is old village and continue downhill to Chame which is district head quarter of Manang. |
At the beginning the easy trail leads to Koto and continue down to Danaque which offers spectacular view of Mt. Manaslu. Views are amazing although you have trekked same way up already, the different angle view would surely make you difference as you never walked this trail. Finally arrive at Tal for overnight stay. |
The trail descends to Chanje and continues to Ghermu phant then gently up to Bahundanda. After that the trail drops down to Khudi and continues to Besisahar along the bank of Marsyangdi River. Overnight stay at the lodge. |
It is a same highway you are driving to Kathmandu. Evening you would have short time to do some shop around Thamel. We will meet this evening for our farewell dinner together to share your experience of the trek. Overnight stay at Hotel. |
Today is the last day of the trip with us. If you would like to extend your holiday with us, we will help you otherwise we will assist you to the airport as per your flight departure time. |
